Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Omega 3 Fish Oil

More and more research is confirming the benefits of an Omega 3 fish oil supplement for children with ADHD. This disorder is described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Edition IV, as "A disruptive behavior disorder characterized by the presence of a set of chronic and impairing behavior patterns that display abnormal levels of inattention, hyperactivity, or their combination".

For parents, children and teachers it can be a nightmare. However, there is a growing body of research showing a definite link between Omega 3 Fish Oil and a reduction in many of the symptoms displayed by children with ADHD. Until recently it was thought that the drug Ritalin was the only effective treatment for this disorder. But when you consider that until relatively recently this drug could only be prescribed by Neurologists because of its similarities to opiates, you understand why many parents are at best reluctant to give it to their children.

Why Omega 3 fish oil works so well in helping children with ADHD is easier to understand when you realize that it contains EPA (eicospentaenoic acid), which is an essential fatty acid. This fatty acid makes up 40% of all the fatty acids in the brain. It is necessary for all healthy cell construction and for effective neuron function. Recent medical thinking is that a lack of EPA contributes significantly to the cause of ADHD in children.

One of the main symptoms of the condition is an inability to concentrate or a shortened attention span causing real problems in learning and behavior. The Oxford-Durham study in the UK gave Omega 3 fish oil to one group of children and studied their development over a six month period. Their average ages in reading and spelling ability increased by 9.5 months and 6.5 months respectively after three months when measured against a control group. The supplement was then continued for another three months during which both groups were given it. The original group continued to improve while the control group averages, after the second three months, were similar to the improvements made by the experimental group.

It seems quite obvious looking at this and other studies that using Omega 3 fish oil as a daily supplement is a great idea for both the children and the parents. Those who have children suffering from ADHD know the problems created by this disorder and would welcome a product that reduces and controls the symptoms.
