For the parent of a child suffering with ADD or ADHD, they know how the child struggles with their school performance and as a result develops self esteem issues. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are conditions that are very closely related. According to the Mayo Clinic, they are characterized by a combination of problems including hyperactivity, impulsivity, and problems paying attention.

Junk foods have excessive amounts of calories, lack essential minerals and vitamins that your child needs, and are low in nutritional value. You also want to remember that the artificial coloring used some foods fuel a child's hyperactive behavior.

Make sure your child gets adequate every day - fatigue typically intensifies the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. The last thing you need is for your child to become overtired.

Avoid the situations that make things difficult for your ADD/ADHD child - once you learn how to identify these situations and avoid them. Sitting through lengthy presentations is an example of the type of situation that you should avoid.

Enroll your child in psychosocial treatment - oftentimes referred to as behavioral therapy, this teaches specific techniques that are geared towards the needs of the child as well as their extended family, their parents, and their teachers.

Common misconceptions

One of the most common misconceptions regarding ADD and ADHD medical treatment is merely a substitute or replacement for proper parenting. Although it is true that parenting oftentimes affects the outcome of these disorders, parents are not typically the cause of the condition. Another misconception is that ADD or ADHD children are unintelligent. In fact, just the opposite holds true in many instances and some children with ADD/ADHD are quite gifted and extremely intelligent. They just have trouble paying attention or remaining calm.

What is important is that early diagnosis of ADD or ADHD usually leads to effective treatment and a better outcome for the child and their parents. Pay attention to your child's behavior and if you are suspicious of a problem existing, consult with their pediatrician or your family physician regarding this.
