Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Children with ADHD are often diagnosed with behavioral problems. The child may do things that are impulsive. Such as jokingly push down another child that is smaller than he or she is; not realizing they can hurt the child. The child is there for the moment and not the consequence thereafter. Basically, he or she doesn't think things through such as "what may happen if I do this?"

The ADHD child has a very difficult time waiting for his or her turn such as in line at school. He or she will probably start talking to another student and not behave. The child may skip in line or move on to another task.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

The ADHD child may seem like they never sit down and stop. The child may seem to constantly bounce around the house. When the child does finally sit down they may keep on moving such as fidgeting in their seat.

Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Other signs of ADHD include making reckless errors on their school work. Things that the child could've seen and corrected, but due to ADHD and not being able to concentrate, the child skipped right over it.

The child often moves on from one task to another before even finishing the first task. Boredom sets in or a new idea pops into the child's head and he or she is off to the next task.

Another ADHD symptom includes inability to organize. The child may have a very hard time getting ready for school in the morning. The child may start to put on his or her clothes, then decide to eat breakfast. The child really needs to have a set schedule and help with organization.

The child is usually louder than other children and engages in loud games and play before choosing quiet activities. He or she may do a quiet activity, but more times than not, has to keep on making noises or excessively talk.

You can call your doctor and speak to your child's teacher if you suspect ADHD. You will most likely have to fill out forms on your child's behaviors and tendencies. Three of his or her teachers will fill out the same papers, too. With this documentation, and speaking to you, your doctor can determine if your child has ADHD.

Children with ADHD can be treated to make the most of their abilities. There are wonderful natural remedies besides prescription drugs. A child with ADHD can start with a special diet, exercise, and allergy test. If your child is showing the above ADHD symptoms, please try natural remedies first.

ADD, ADHD Or AD-HD? What's the Difference?

When a child or adult is diagnosed with an Attention Deficit Disorder, people are often confused by the terminology. Is it ADD, ADHD, AD/HD, or do all those names mean the same thing? Generally, people are pretty clear that all those labels refer to a disorder where someone struggles with organization, paying attention, completing tasks and sometimes hyperactivity and understanding social skills. Often, people will use ADD to refer to trouble paying attention, and ADHD when there is also hyperactivity.

As with most issues involving diagnoses of "mental disorders", the official facts are found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision, published by the American Psychiatric Association, and usually referred to as the DSM-IV-TR(TM). This is the manual that mental health professionals use to diagnose any type of mental disorder. Based on this official source, the name is Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, but it's classified as one of the Attention-Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders. It's broken down into a predominately inattentive type, a predominantly hyperactive type (which can also include impulsive behaviors), and a combined type, involving both inattention and hyperactivity and/or impulsivity. Note that all types are called Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, even the version that involves only inattention, with no hyperactivity. No wonder people get confused. To top it off, the DSM-IV-TR never uses any abbreviation to refer to the disorder.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

What difference does this make? In many ways, not a bit of difference. Most people will know what you're talking about whether you call it ADD, or ADHD, although it's probably wise to specify the subtype if you know it. However, if you're searching for information online, all things are not equal. Certainly, the internet doesn't provide the answer. A Google search for ADD turns up over 400 million sites, while the less popular ADHD still turns up almost 2 million. Add a slash, as in AD/HD, and you've got almost 800,000 more. Of course, some of those ADD sites will be for the word "add" and have nothing to do with Attention Deficit. Many sites, especially the biggest, will come up regardless of the abbreviation you choose.

ADD, ADHD Or AD-HD? What's the Difference?

What about when you're talking to the professionals? Just like using proper grammar, you can never go wrong with using the correct professional labels and calling it AD/HD. If you're going to be interacting with doctors, teachers, or therapists, it pays to use the official name. Most people become very well educated about their own or their child's diagnosis, and using the appropriate name shows that you know what you're talking about.

When you're looking for support groups, books or articles, you'll probably have to try all three abbreviations. ADD has history, easy pronunciation, and cleverness in its favor, hence support groups such as CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and ADDA (Attention Deficit Disorder Association, for adults with AD/HD) and publications like ADDitude magazine. ADHD and more precisely AD/HD have the advantage of accuracy. A search for books on Amazon or Barnes and Noble turns up completely different results when the abbreviations are changed, so you'll have to try all of them.

Of course, this is only true right now, with the current edition of the DSM. In another few years, the APA will release the updated edition of the DSM, and it's anybody's guess what the disorder will be called by then!

ADD, ADHD Or AD-HD? What's the Difference?

What is Adult Attention Deficit Disorder and Do I Have It? Or Am I Just a Space-Cadet?

In the past, professionals believed that AD/HD, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder was a disorder for children. You might have heard it called ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder. The official diagnosis is AD/HD. What we have found is that children often don't "out grow" this disorder. Adults might have found ways to compensate for it as they grow older; but, the essential features remain and often intrude in their lives.

I became interested in Adult AD/HD when I met Jason*, a 34 year old attorney who had left the legal field and worked for the Federal Government. He was bored. He reported that he could do any job for six months; however, after six months, he became bored. Since this did not make for a good work record, we decided to explore if his boredom was due to being underemployed, in the wrong career, or ADHD. Since he operated in the genius level of intelligence, I suspected that he might have difficulty with finding a challenging career. He had no particular interests. He became an attorney by default. After testing and a careful review of his history, I suggested he see a psychiatrist for medication for ADHD. He fit the criteria; but, he did not have the history documented in his early school years because he was in a private school which was structured. He daydreamed much of the time. He didn't have to listen or study. He just absorbed the material and got A's. He also had a co-morbid diagnosis of Dysthymia. This had complicated identifying the ADHD diagnosis. He has been able to find a position which involves variety as well as challenges. With medication, he is able to focus and produce.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

Have you ever been called spacey, disorganized, absent-minded or distractible? Do you attempt to organize but quickly get overwhelmed? If so, read on.

What is Adult Attention Deficit Disorder and Do I Have It? Or Am I Just a Space-Cadet?

Adults with AD/HD are more likely to discover that they, too, are AD/HD, if an offspring is diagnosed with ADHD. I see clients who hesitantly confess, "I took my son's medication. I didn't feel differently physically; but, I was able to make a list of what I wanted to do. I actually got to cross of some of the items." In the past, clients tell me that they start projects but don't finish them. In the midst of trying to finish them, they might get distracted by something else. One client could not sort silverware - it was too overwhelming for her. These clients attract much teasing and criticism from family, friends and bosses.

So do any of the following fit you?

o often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in work or other activities
o often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
o often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
o often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish chores or tasks in the workplace
o often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities
o often avoids, dislikes or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort
o often loses things that are necessary for activities
o is easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
o is often forgetful in daily activities

Six or more of the above might suggest an AD/HD diagnosis. It is important that a professional interview you about these symptoms as they could be related to other disorders. For example, if you have ever had a head injury, you might display similar behaviors.

What about the Hyperactivity part of AD/HD. So often, the media forgets that adults can be hyperactive as well as Attention Deficit. Do any of these behaviors sound like yours?

o often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in chair
o often leaves seat when remaining seated is expected
o often feels restless
o has difficulty engaging in leisure activities quietly
o is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor"
o often talks excessively
o Impulsive, such as
o often blurts out answers before questions have been completed
o often has difficulty awaiting turn
o often interrupts or intrudes on others, such as in conversations

Do six or more describe your behavior over the past six months? Do your behaviors impair you in two or more areas of your life?

A note about symptoms - some of the most famous and intelligent people in history displayed symptoms of ADHD, such as Albert Einstein. He was also able to hyper-focus on one area at a time. This can confuse people who have this symptom because there is a stereotype that AD/HD people can't focus on anything! You can have AD/HD with primarily attentional problems or hyperactivity problems. You don't have to have both to be diagnosed. Again, what might seem like AD/HD might be some other disorder that for which you can get help!

A psychologist can give you tests and interviews in order to determine if you have this disorder, other disorders, such as anxiety or depression, or a combination of disorders. Sometimes learning disabilities coexists with ADHD. Adults who always assumed that they were "stupid" discover that they are average to above average intelligence. So seeking professional diagnosis can help you learn ways to thrive in spite of having AD/HD.

Understanding Facts About Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Does your child seem unable to pay attention in school? If you are receiving notes from your child's teacher on a consistent basis you may want to consider seeing a doctor. There are many conditions that have similar symptoms as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. A lack of paying attention is one of the symptoms of ADHD but it is also a symptom of other conditions such as immaturity.

In order to determine if a child has Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder they will first need to be tested. Once the teacher has contacted you suggesting that this is a possibility you will then need to schedule an appointment with your child's doctor. There is no direct test to state that a child has ADHD or not however after a few exclusive tests your doctor will be able to rule out all other possible conditions and diagnose your child with ADHD if they in fact have it.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

Treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can vary depending on many factors; how severe your child's ADHD is, your opinion on putting your child on medication, and more. There are several treatments available for ADHD and it may take a combination of a few to make it work for your child. There may also be some treatments that work while others do not.

Understanding Facts About Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

When it comes to the classroom you can't go and sit with your child all day in order to pay attention for them or to keep your child calm and listening however you can have frequent meetings with your child so you can work as a team to help your child. In some cases, depending on the severity of the ADHD your child may do better in a smaller classroom setting or in special education. You may need to also consider a special tutoring program for your child as well. All of these options can be discussed with your child's teacher during your meeting. When it comes to your child, you may find yourself becoming defensive when it comes to your child and that is a natural feeling. However your child's teacher is with him all day long and they have several years of experience so it is important to listen to their recommendations and talk about it first.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can control your child and your entire family so its important to take control of the situation as quickly as possible and during this time give your child extra hugs and support to let them know that everything will be alright. Once you find treatment that works for your child then your household will feel some sort of normal again and life will be something you can manage. As your child grows up the need for alternative treatment or supplemental treatment may increase as their body tends to grow and develop however it is important not to worry too much about these little changes but do prepare for them.

Understanding Facts About Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Treating ADD and ADHD Without Medication

For the parent of a child suffering with ADD or ADHD, they know how the child struggles with their school performance and as a result develops self esteem issues. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are conditions that are very closely related. According to the Mayo Clinic, they are characterized by a combination of problems including hyperactivity, impulsivity, and problems paying attention.

Treating these conditions with medication is oftentimes successful. However, more and more parents are encountering success by not using drugs to treat the condition. There are natural remedies available for parents to try that do offer some relief when treating these conditions. Interestingly enough, these remedies do not pose any risk of side effects. Consider the following:

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

Create a schedule of their eating and sleeping habits - this includes their bedtime, when they eat their meals and when they take their naps. Additionally, create a calendar that lists special activities they participate in.

Treating ADD and ADHD Without Medication

Work on improving their diet - your child should focus on high protein diets that include beans, eggs, meats, nuts, and seeds all of which are considered to be high in protein. These foods typically help the child focus better. You also want to include plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Cut out the junk foods - if you are going to follow the above advice regarding protein, it makes sense that you would eliminate as many junk foods as possible from their diet. Junk foods have excessive amounts of calories, lack essential minerals and vitamins that your child needs, and are low in nutritional value. You also want to remember that the artificial coloring used some foods fuel a child's hyperactive behavior.

Make sure your child gets adequate every day - fatigue typically intensifies the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. The last thing you need is for your child to become overtired.

Avoid the situations that make things difficult for your ADD/ADHD child - once you learn how to identify these situations and avoid them. Sitting through lengthy presentations is an example of the type of situation that you should avoid.

Enroll your child in psychosocial treatment - oftentimes referred to as behavioral therapy, this teaches specific techniques that are geared towards the needs of the child as well as their extended family, their parents, and their teachers.

Common misconceptions

One of the most common misconceptions regarding ADD and ADHD medical treatment is merely a substitute or replacement for proper parenting. Although it is true that parenting oftentimes affects the outcome of these disorders, parents are not typically the cause of the condition. Another misconception is that ADD or ADHD children are unintelligent. In fact, just the opposite holds true in many instances and some children with ADD/ADHD are quite gifted and extremely intelligent. They just have trouble paying attention or remaining calm.

What is important is that early diagnosis of ADD or ADHD usually leads to effective treatment and a better outcome for the child and their parents. Pay attention to your child's behavior and if you are suspicious of a problem existing, consult with their pediatrician or your family physician regarding this.

Effective ADHD Supplements May Naturally Help Increase Attention Span

Prescription drugs for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder for kids under the age of 16 has increased 33% since 2005. Popular stimulant drugs like Ritalin and Concerta are known to suppress brainwaves associated with genius level originality and may come with negative side effects. ADHD supplements often are a gentler, natural approach to tackle the unmanageable symptoms of ADHD.

Understanding childhood ADHD is one of our most essential issues today. The world today requires imaginative, genius level problem solving and leadership. We can no longer go on with outdated ways of perceiving the world and still deal successfully with the problems facing us currently, at the start of the twenty first century.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

Currently there is growing apprehension that the most resourceful and brilliant young people are being suppressed by medicines and restraint in order to fit into an overly rigid structure that eventually thwarts their full advancement. The educational system will be slow to alter, so that means parents may have the task of discovering the most effective and healthiest ways to help their teenagers to succeed within a system that's not thus far equipped to deal with them as they are.

Effective ADHD Supplements May Naturally Help Increase Attention Span

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is normally dealt with conventional medications like Ritalin and Adderall that work in part by stimulating activity in the human brain and nervous system. In recent years, the FDA has issued safety considerations about these drug treatments. Some parents with ADHD kids, as well as some adults with the illness are using natural health remedies such as the herb ginkgo biloba as well as others.

Effective ADHD supplements

Ginkgo Biloba is often used in nutritional supplements because of its well-known positive effects on the human brain and nervous system. Ginkgo has been used traditionally to increase mental performance and boost focusing capability. Several research reports have shown that it helps improve neurotransmitter ranges as well as blood circulation to the brain.

The common symptoms of ADHD such as restlessness and lack of concentration have been significantly lessened with ginkgo along with other herbs in particular research studies. They have additionally been revealed to ease irritability and frustration, which is on occasion aggravated by conventional ADHD medications. One of its most appealing qualities is that the therapeutic effects experienced by these herbs tend to become permanent if use is discontinued.

In long-established natural treatments, traditional herbs are frequently combined in formulas for specific concerns. This can help produce a synergistic end product which makes the combined herbs more valuable than any single herb by itself. A few other herbs which have been combined with ginkgo to effectively attend to ADHD symptoms are:

*skullcap
*german chamomile
*gotu cola
*rooibos

Supplements for ADHD which include the previously mentioned traditional herbs are being successfully used to address signs and symptoms as a natural substitute to conventional medicines. A natural health care provider can answer any issues or inquiries you may have, as well as put together a holistic remedy strategy that incorporates diet plan and life-style alterations as well as looking at other strategies.

Discipline Children With ADHD

Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are notoriously difficult to discipline. Because children with ADHD have trouble focusing, it can be hard to get them to do what you ask or listen to the reason why they are being punished. Consequences such as timeout can be hard to enforce with children who are easily distracted as well.

Although enforcing discipline with children who have ADHD can be challenging, there are effective ways to discipline a child with this disorder. There are a few techniques you should learn as well as common mistakes you should avoid to ensure that your message gets across.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

One of the biggest mistakes parents make when trying to discipline children with ADHD is not communicating what the child did wrong and what they should do instead. It is important to clearly explain what a child did wrong and what they should do instead. Children usually hear why they are being punished but often miss out on hearing what the appropriate behavior should be. It is important to tell children how they should act instead so next time they are in a similar situation they will have that knowledge to draw on and make better choices.

Discipline Children With ADHD

If you often find yourself losing your temper, screaming, or yelling, your child may have come to expect this type of behavior before they respond to your requests or discipline. If these actions are the only thing your child responds to your child may have learned that they will not be punished until this point or that you will not follow through on threats until you get angry.

To effectively discipline children with ADHD parents have to be consistent with their rules and requests and always follow through on consequences or punishment. Children will respond better to calm requests when they know the rules will be enforced.

It is important to determine what you want your child to do instead of their bad behavior or what you want them to learn from a consequence or punishment. Discipline should be used as a teaching tool to instill these lessons and values in your child so that they can begin to make better decisions and judgments.

Effective discipline requires good communication, consistency, and clear boundaries and limitations, especially for children with ADHD. You should also remember that recognizing and rewarding good behavior is just as important as disciplining a child.

Once you learn how to send a clear message, follow through with consequences, and effectively communicate with your child, discipline will become easier.

ADHD Definition and Research or What We Need to Know About Our Own Personal ADHD

The current ADHD definition in research is faulty and misunderstood by many ADHD researchers. ADHD is very complex. We who have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) need to understand it to choose the best ADHD treatment strategy for each of us personally. Having the symptoms of ADHD can be a disorder, depending on circumstances and situations, but ADHD is not an illness, sickness or disease.

The definition of ADHD is found in the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition). This is the standard reference in defining mental disorders in research. Except for a few minor revisions, this manual is twenty years old.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

These diagnoses are based on scientific attitudes from the 1980s. Our knowledge of the brain has increased twenty fold over this twenty-year period, mainly thanks to technology that was not yet invented in the 1980s. The ADHD diagnosis criteria do not reflect the advances over the last two decades.

ADHD Definition and Research or What We Need to Know About Our Own Personal ADHD

The next version of the ADHD diagnosis, in the DSM-V, is being rushed out to keep to the timetable. It is due in the spring of 2012, but in January 2011 is behind schedule.

If you, your spouse or your child has ADHD you will be aware of the difficulties that come with attention deficit. But are you aware of the positive sides of the ADHD personality? Any treatment, cure or solution needs to take consideration of the strengths and positive sides to be really effective.

We should not kill off our creativity, enthusiasm and sparkle to be able to concentrate. That is where natural formulated supplements are superior to ADHD medication. Another of the ADHD treatments and strategies is choosing an occupation that suits our ADHD personality and temperament. This is a healthier lifestyle choice than a daily dose of an ADHD drug.

Treating ADHD symptoms can be difficult enough if you know what you are doing, but if you are following the crowd and follow wrong treatment advice, it becomes more difficult in the long run. ADHD solutions need to be for life, and not a quick fix for the moment. This is the attraction of natural ADHD strategies and cures.

Problems with DSM-IV ADHD Definition
Since the DSM-IV is the ADHD definition we need to understand a little background about this statistical manual of mental disorders. One important fact is that it refers to statistical data. Are you or your loved one a statistical data? If not, think on these things:

The DSM-IV ADHD definition is categorical. If you have six of nine criteria, you have ADHD, but if you have five of these nine criteria you do not have ADHD. That is statistically and by definition. Real life ADHD symptoms vary dimensionally. They vary from sometimes and mild, to nearly always and severe. Someone with four of nine criteria that are severe has more of a problem than someone with nine out of nine criteria, but mild. There are no objective medical tests to determine if someone has attention deficit or hyperactivity. The "tests" are either subjective, relying on parents' and teachers' attitudes and opinions, or artificial and are not relevant to the lives of the children tested.

If you want a lasting solution to ADHD, there are natural cures, strategies and treatments for your particular combination of ADHD symptoms. ADHD medication manipulates the dopamine system for a few hours, and then it is back to the attention deficit and/or hyperactivity symptoms. They do control the symptoms for a few hours, but do nothing to cure the pervasive problems.

If ADHD is really caused by a dopamine imbalance, then I ask one question. How do they explain how the child who was dopamine deficient at school can be perfectly focused and concentrated half an hour later at home while engaged in a favourite pastime?

Mainstream research has no adequate ADHD definition, because attention deficit and hyperactivity are complicated, but we who are affected by attention deficit in our lives need to come to terms with how it affects us individually and develop the optimum lifestyle and coping strategies to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

Challenges of ADHD - How to Deal With ADHD Tantrums

ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with the primary symptoms being inattention, impulsive or erratic behavior, and hyperactivity. ADHD children are typically impatient and become bored and/or frustrated easily.

If there was ever a recipe for titanic tantrums it would be the above symptoms all mixed together in a flammable concoction and then ignited by some unforeseen need, want, or desire.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordes

I was told a story recently by an adult woman who has struggled with the impulsive hyperactive type of ADHD since childhood. She reflecting back on her days as a young child when she would drive her parents to drinking by asking hundreds of times "Are We There Yet" on their way to the family vacation spot. She also admitted she threw in a tantrum or two when she failed to get the attention she wanted.

Challenges of ADHD - How to Deal With ADHD Tantrums

Many parents of children with attention deficit disorder know this story all too well because they have lived it. On the other hand those who haven't experienced attention deficit hyperactivity disorder up close and personal would be hard pressed to relate.

So this brings us to our first cornerstone for how to deal with ADHD tantrums and that is to be patient, and if possible stay calm. Let's face it as a parent there will be only so much you can take but by remaining calm (at least on the outside) you will be able to control the situation much better and set the narrative once things settle down.

Acceptance. Remember your child likely has a neurotransmitter (dopamine, norepinephrine) chemical imbalance in the brain combined with the possibility that certain areas of the brain controlling self-regulation may be underdeveloped. You must accept that tantrums are part of the parenting landscape. Acceptance will help you be more prepared and stay calmer since you know the inevitable tantrum is coming.

Like parent like child. Well maybe. Believe it or not there a couple of genes passed down from a ADHD parent to ADHD child that have been linked to irregularities in the dopamine pathway in the brain and likely contribute to self-regulation problems such as tantrums. Perhaps as a child you threw a tantrum or two. If so ask yourself how you wanted your parents to respond during these episodes. You may have the answer as for how to deal with ADHD tantrums effectively and not realize it.

If possible don't give in. As parents we all give in from time to time but by giving in to a screaming child you are conveying the message that if they scream long enough and loud enough they will eventually get what they want.

Take the emphasis off the present. For example your are in the grocery store on isle five when your child comes unglued over not being able to have 5 giant bags of M&M candy. If you can convince them something better is on row 7 they very well might calm down and forget about row 7 on row 6. I once overheard an ADHD counselor convince a child that the most important thing they were going to do today was the next thing. This kept this child looking forward and reduced their tantrums by about half. It was a brilliant strategy but likely is not right for every ADHD child.

Homeopathic remedies. Most homeopathic remedies for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder contain at least one ingredient that helps to quell tantrums and disruptive behavior. A couple of examples are Hyoscyamus and Arsen iod. Something to think about wouldn't you say?

In conclusion, there is no 100% foolproof guidebook that has all the answers when it comes to how to deal with ADHD tantrums. That said, hopefully the information above will provide you with enough useful information to formulate a comprehensive plan for child tantrum management while helping you retain your sanity for at least a little while longer.
